Experience

The past 38+ years of teaching have flown by! I started out teaching in primary grades but fourth grade is my sweet spot. I have also taught multiple subject credential/teaching methods courses at several universities, give workshops throughout the state, as well served as a mentor teacher for most of my teaching career. I have been a National Board Certified Teacher since 1998.

Teaching style

My students know my favorite saying is, "Explain your thinking!" Being able to articulate (orally and in writing) their learning process is crucial for students to grow and develop. I truly believe in hands-on exploration so children can gain a clear understanding of concepts and connections between ideas. My teaching style is to teach the whole child; depth over breadth!

Awards & shining teacher moments

Los Angeles Unified School District Teacher of the Year (2019), Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year (2008), Los Angeles Unified School District Teacher of the Year (2008), Palisades Charter Schools Foundation: Lori Petrick Educators Award (2006), Los Angeles Reading Association Literature Teacher of the Year (1995), Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Month (1992)

My own education history

I have my BA in English literature from UCLA and my MA in Education from California State University, Northridge.

Additional biographical information

I am married to a wonderful, patient husband; we have three fabulous daughters and two darling grandsons. My passions outside of teaching include my Bible study group, reading, scrapbooking (yes, I still do that!), yoga, bungee fitness, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends!
