  • Interventions
  • Special Education
  • EL Students

EACH story in this resource includes:

1. A running record you can use to assess your students

2. A decodable reader book with a cover and decodable pages (print/copy on both sides to make books smaller and use less paper)

3. Four additional activities that can be added to the decodable book

  • ”Let’s Practice” Word List
  • Smiley Face Fluency Practice
  • Labeling Pictures
  • Comprehension Questions

4. A decodable reading passage

5. Comprehension questions & labeling activities for the fluency passage

6. Teacher word cards with the phonics pattern and trickier words from the decodable reader

7. A word sort

Differentiate and make this resource fit YOUR students’ needs!

  • You can break up the book/lesson over multiple days if needed. For example, on day one you could use the teacher cards to introduce the words, have students complete the word sort, and practice reading the words. On day two students could read the story, label the pictures, and do comprehension questions.
  • Some weeks it may be easier to use the reading passage, others you may prefer to use the book.
  • If you feel the fluency smiley faces, comprehension questions or labeling are too much for a particular group of students – simply don’t add those pages to the decodable book.
  • Students can highlight the phonics skill they are practicing in the decodable.
  • Have students color the pictures before or after reading.

How to Assess Using Seesaw

  • Take a picture or screenshot of the reading passage and upload it to Seesaw. Students can record themselves reading the passage and you can use the running record to assess their reading.
